The Microfading Tester International Discussion Group (MFT-IDG) – sponsored by AIC’s Preventive Care Network, and initiated in Spring 2024 – advances MFT practice and supports the global MFT user community.
MFT is the rare example of a technique emerging from within the conservation field rather than from a larger external field. Developed by Paul Whitmore, Xun Pan, and Catherine Bailie (JAIC 1999), MFT is an analytical technique that determines the in situ light sensitivity of colors on an object. Access to this predictive information provides valuable context when developing exhibitions and deciding on a preservation lighting policy.
While the use of MFT in the cultural heritage field continues to grow, instrumental support and training has been sparse, and discussion of how MFT data informs lighting policy has been confined to a relatively small group of practitioners. Further, a self-supporting MFT user community remains underdeveloped, limiting the growth of regional networks and communication with allied colleagues.
The MFT-IDG seeks to fill these voids by establishing and fostering an international network of heritage professionals interested in advancing MFT practice and interpretation. Our intended audience embraces conservators, conservation scientists, collection managers, curators, and registrars.
