Join the National Heritage Responders (NHR)

How can I become a responder?

  • Complete a training through one of FAIC's Alliance for Response networks or the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative (SCRI) Heritage Emergency and Response Training (HEART)
  • After attending a training, pass an exam which covers emergency response and recovery fundamentals.
In addition to the core requirements, we consider geographic location and specialty when onboarding new responders.

Our Upcoming Trainings

2024: We will host a training in conjunction with the New Orleans Preservation Coalition in October 2024. If you live and work in Louisiana, email emergencies@culturalheritage.org for more information.

Cyclical Onboarding

  • Already complete a training? Access the exam by emailing emergencies@culturalheritage.org.
  • We will place those who pass the exam in a pool of eligible members.
  • Each May, we identify any gaps (geographic, expertise, etc...) on the team and onboard eligible members who will contribute to the team's diversity.
